The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in 2023, there were 2.4 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 deaths globally. By the end of 2023, there were 7.8 million living women diagnosed with breast cancer in the last 5 years, making it the most common cancer in the world. Meanwhile, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. In 2022, an estimated 604,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 342,000 women died from the disease.
According to data from the Global Cancer Observatory (Globocan) 2022, as many as 406.661 recorded new cases on both sexes (males and females) diagnosed in Indonesia and from this data, it was found that breast cancer was in the 1st position with 66.271 cases (16,2%).
One of the goals of SCORA CIMSA-BEM KM FK Unand is to Increase knowledge
about breast cancer and cervical cancer, early detection of breast cancer and prevention efforts in an effort to help reduce the incidence of breast cancer in Padang City through education to Staff Hanifah Medical Centre. In Padang City, based on medical record data from Dr. M. Djamil Padang General Hospital in 2020, the number of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy was 177 patients and increased in 2021 to 201 patients.
On October 11th 2024, SCORA CIMSA-BEM KM FK Unand held pre-activity training about “Detection and Screening for Breast Cancer” from PETRA SCORA CIMSA BEM-KM FK UNAND. We also teached how to do SADARI (Periksa Payudara Sendiri).
On October 12th 2024, SCORA CIMSA BEM-KM FK Unand held LOOPY’s main activity. The main activity aimed to increase awareness and knowledge of Staff Hanifah Medical Centre Kota Padang about breast cancer, and then efforts to reduce breast cancer risk factors, also early detection of breast cancer with SADARI. For our main activity, we held an educational session and a talk show on 'breast cancer' presented by PERABOI, specifically dr. Hendra Herizal, Sp.B.Subsp.Onk(K), and also from LOVEPINK Padang. In detail, the education provided by PERABOI focused on early detection and how to prevent breast cancer. Then, the LOVEPINK team taught us how to do a self-breast exam at home. The goal of this event was to provide understanding, which could also be seen from the post-test and pre-test given to the staff at Hanifah Medical Center regarding early detection of breast cancer. After the event, we also held fun games and a Q&A session for the audience to test their understanding of the material.
